The Best Magazine In The World

I go on about this magazine all the time. Even if you think you're the sort of person who won't be interested in its contents, you probably will be if you give it a chance. At the very least, I suggest you get a sample issue or sign up for one year to taste it.

What am I talking about? Well, don't be put off by the title. It's called Skeptic magazine and it is published by Michael Shermer and his team at the Skeptics Society, California. If it has a flaw, it's the title - which could put some people off. But don't stop reading...

Some people are poor adverts for what being 'skeptical' is all about. It's not about being cynical, or debunking things, or taking a negative view. Let me explain it like this. If you go and buy a car, you want it to work. You don't want the sales guy to spin some plausible lies and get you to pay for something that doesn't work. Right?

In a similar vein, if you're going to believe in something, it's a smart move to believe in something that's real, and true, and actually works. This isn't as simple as it sounds, because (a) the world isn't exactly short of people making claims that don't actually stack up and (b) your mind and emotions can often play tricks on you, so you end up believing in things that just aren't so. (This in turn often means predatory scum can take money off you.)

The healthy, skeptical outlook is about learning how to think straight and distinguish the good cheese from the stuff that might look OK but isn't really worth eating. That's all. I'm a skeptic, and it doesn't mean I'm smarter or nicer or more successful than anyone else. It just means I don't make quite as many belief-mistakes as most people, most of the time, and this tends to make life a little sunnier.

For more info, go to www.skeptic.com . Michael Shermer, who founded the mag and edits it and writes for it, is a walking, talking genius. He's a conspicuously super-fit guy who has set all kinds of records in the world of cycling; he writes best-selling books; does terrific talks and lectures; handles media appearances with great charm and skill and also produces this wonderful, lively, readable, absorbing and beautifully produced magazine. I'm a huge fan of him and the magazine, and I suggest you do yourself a favour, subscribe or at least check out a sample issue, and see if I'm right!
