FMO Items To Buy > Mind & Magic of David Berglas
by David Britland
published by Jim Steinmeyer

Pages: 556
Price: £150 plus postage
To order: Unfortunately this magnificent book is now sold out. It is also highly unlikely that it will ever be reprinted. Only one thousand copies were printed, and these have all now found good homes. If you want a copy, you will simply have to go to places where magicians sell second-hand books, and wait until a copy becomes available.

If you want to contact David Berglas about this book, you can send an email here. However, even he does not have any copies left (honestly). David has asked me to keep this description of the book and its contents here, as a convenient reference. I am happy to do so.

Prior to its publication in Nov 2002, this monumental work was one of the most eagerly awaited titles in the history of magical publishing. It's not hard to see why.

David Berglas has lived a truly remarkable and multi-faceted life, packed with extraordinary success and achievement. Throughout the world of magic, he enjoys an unrivalled international reputation for his unique magical accomplishments, and in particular for his highly distinctive and celebrated contributions to the field of mentalism.

His astonishing career spanned the entire second half of the twentieth century, from the 'golden age' of music hall and variety to the modern era of laser disks and live satellite broadcasts. Every step of the way, Berglas has been the master showman exploring the full magical potential of each new  medium and development. As a live stage performer, Berglas's record speaks for itself. He has performed in more or less every town and city in Britain, up to and including the most prestigeous West End stages, as well as countless theatrical and cabaret venues around the world. When radio came along, Berglas made himself into a household name by devising fresh and innovative 'radio magic' illusions, many of which hold up even today as incredible feats of deceptive skill. When TV became the dominant medium, Berglas was there again, devising new formats and presentations, and going far beyond what any 'mind magician' had done before... or has done since.

Berglas also pioneered the use of magic as a corporate promotional tool, and devised numerous ways to stage spectacular and news-worthy magical illusions for his sponsors. He has also been a consultant on many TV and feature film projects, working with the likes of Stanley Kubrick and Orson Welles. Now officially 'retired', Berglas finds himself - like so many retired people - busier than ever before, and is still the biggest draw at any magic convention, especially those devoted to mind magic.

If you get the impression Berglas has seen it all and done it all, you're absolutely right. And in this book, at long last, it's all set down in print for the first time. This beautifully produced book presents the man, the life, the magic and the mysteries that were key to Berglas's extraordinary success. Countless tricks and routines are explained in detail, many for the very first time, but there is also a wealth of solid gold advice on magical performance and presentation. As if that were not enough, the book also provides rare insights into the compelling story of Berglas's rise from humble origins to enduring worldwide fame.

Only 1000 copies of this book were printed they have now all been sold.

David Britland has long been estabished as one of magic's finest thinkers, writers and explainers, and has done a magnificent job of distilling a lifetime's work and achievement into a highly readable and illuminating book. He presents the subject matter with admirably clarity, but also provides many asides, notes and additional factual commentary based on his own phenomenal knowledge of magical history.

Jim Steinmeyer needs no introduction as one of the magic world's top-flight thinkers, innovators and consultants. As producer and publisher of this extraordinary book, he insisted on the very highest quality and standards at every stage.
