in the same show I took part in the phone-in. One woman called in to say she had been to
see a 'psychic' who had (apparently) been able to tell her all about a close relative who
had recently died. This same psychic had then worried this woman by forecasting some
impending bad news. I spontaneously launched into a brief demonstration of 'cold reading'
with the caller, telling her about the same events, just to show her how the technique
works. This was unplanned, and to be honest this small demonstration was very brief and not
spectacularly impressive. Nonetheless, it was good enough for the woman to say that she
could now see how she had been taken in. She later phoned the show to say she now felt
much better!
Fact check: Richard Madeley was not a stooge or confederate. He did not tell any lies
on my behalf, nor did he mislead the viewers. He didn't load anything into the envelope
for me. He had no idea what he would find inside the envelope when he opened it. My thanks
and acknowledgements go to all the wonderful people at Granada and the 'This Morning'
production team - a highly professional team who were also great to work with.
