Lafayette Park isn't all that spectacular, and that's part of the reason people go there. It's just a quiet, relaxing, enjoyable part of town, bordering Pacific Heights, with some good views over the improbable undulations of the city streets. It's also surrounded by some interesting historical buildings and cute architecture. All in all, a good place for a relaxing walk, fresh air and outdoor musings.
