Wow Cards > ReFlexions Gallery > The Rules

I make all of my Card ReFlexions according to the same self-imposed rules:

  • I start from a single, ordinary mass-produced playing card - normally poker-sized Bicycle cards
  • I slit the card as required by the design
  • I fold it until it is completed.
  • No cutting and joining, no glue, no adhesive of any kind, no joins concealed or otherwise.
  • In theory you can unfold each ReFlexion card back to its original state. In practice, the card's fragility may make this difficult. In formal math speak, the card remains topologically identical to its original state.
  • The card's perimeter remains intact and undisturbed.
  • Nothing is added to the card. In some designs, the slits mean part of the card's surface is permanently lost.

Sometimes I'm asked if I can prove I stick to these rules! This can happen when a given design seems impossible within the rules. Actually, I do obey these rules, but I could only prove it by making a card while you watch - something I would never do because I keep my methods to myself. If you study a design and can't see how it could be constructed, then I have brought a little intrigue and wonder into your world. This is a good thing!

My FLink cards are different. Since they involve a permanent link, they cannot be made according to the above rules. In  math speak, they are no longer topologically identical to their original state.

People who have examined my FLink cards very closely say they have no idea how they are made. This is the general intention. Some magician friends base tricks around FLink cards, and are confident that the average person, given 15 minutes to examine a FLink card, will have no idea how it was made.

My FLink process is unique and original with me. It goes far beyond any previous process used by magicians and others interested in this kind of challenge.
