How Does Cold Reading Apply To Business?

​​​​The term 'cold reading' usually refers to the 'psychic' industry and people giving things like tarot readings.

​​

However, you can apply some aspects of cold reading communication psychology to other contexts of interest to the business / corporate community. You can do this in an ethically positive way.

​

For example, suppose that you work in sales. When you meet a prospect, you want to create as much 'instant rapport' as possible. Cold reading provides you with several ways to do this. It enables you to make meaningful statements to the prospect, about their situation, hopes and concerns, so that they feel you really 'get' them and understand them. 

​​

Cold reading can also be useful in management. It enables you to talk to your team, or the people working for you, in a way that strengthens your role, establishes trust and a cooperative spirit, and makes your staff feel appreciated and understood.

​

These are just two simple examples. The fact is that there are many ways to apply some aspects of cold reading to business situations. I've presented conference sessions on this subject lasting six hours and have taught classes lasting two days!
