Performing in a 'Close-Up' show at The Magic Circle

About The Magic Circle

The Magic Circle is a private members-only magic society based in London. It was founded in 1905.

I am very proud indeed to be a member of the Magic Circle. I greatly enjoy the Monday club nights and I love the magic community in general. Magic has enabled me to meet many wondeful, talented, entertaining friends.

How do you join the Magic Circle? There are various ways but I'll describe the most typical path.

First, you have to submit an application to join, proposed and seconded by two existing members. Then you have a short interview to establish the scope of your current magical knowledge.

If your application is then accepted, you become an 'Apprentice' of the Magic Circle. You then have a year in which to  take what's called your 'exam', although you could also call it an 'audition'. This involves performing a short magic act (8-12 minutes) during a Monday club night, in front of three judges and a room full of current members. Some people find this rather scary and intimidating! If you pass your 'exam', you're in! If not, you can try again after a period of time.

How do the ranks and promotions work?

When you first join, you are MMC, which stands for Member of the Magic Circle.

If at a later stage you are deemed worthy of promotion, because of the quality of your work or your contribution to magic, you can become an AIMC, Associate of the Inner Magic Circle.

Later still, if the Preident deems you worthy of further promotion (and only the President can decide this), you can be promoted to MIMC: Member of the Inner Magic Circle. This is the highest rank of all.

Some people get promotee to MIMC even though they aren't necessarily good performers. For example, you could be awarded MIMC for your services to magic or because you've written some great magic books. To be made 'MIMC with gold star' indicates that you are also considered a very good performer of magic.

I am very pleased and proud to be MIMC with gold star,
